Dr. Myra Young Armstead will sign copies of her new book, "Freedom's Gardener: James F. Brown, Horticulture, and the Hudson Valley in Antebellum America." The book is the first detailed study of the diaries of James F. Brown, Mount Gulian's master gardener in the 19th century. Born a slave in Maryland in 1793, Brown escaped servitude, made his way north to New York and was introduced to the wealthy, Dutch-descended Verplanck family. The Verplancks became his employers and helped him legally acquire his freedom. Brown lived, worked and recorded his daily life at Mount Gulian until he died at the age of 74.
